music Small Venue~Big Talent: Music @ The Bedford

London’s O2 arena may have again recently been named the most popular music venue in the world, but music lovers may agree that there’s something to be said for hearing music in a very intimate venue. The Bedford Pub in Balham, SW London is a 200 seat venue of some renown these days and in days of yore. The Bedford reputation packs a punch with its impressive track record of discovering new talent or boosting musicians’ careers. Music managers and music labels are known to maneuver their musicians onto the stage at the Bedford to season their performance skills; often with incredible results. And, the best part?… no cover charge to get in.

Two young Scots- the soulful Paolo Nutini (New Shoes) and the bluesy KT Tunstall (Black Horse and the Cherry Tree) got their start as this tiny, high-ceiling music venue not that long ago. The Bedford also takes some credit for launching U-2 in London all those years ago .

The interesting thing about this pub is that it offers live music (5 nights a week), Tango, Salsa and other dancing 4 nights a week and comedy 2 nights a week. All the while, serving a wide assortment of beers and ales in addition to affordable British “pub grub”. Have a look at their calendar and menu here:

The Bedford is located at 77 Bedford Road in Balham which can be reached by Tube or rail, with your Oyster card good for either method. The Northern Tube line via Bank Tube station or Charing Cross will take you within minutes of the Bedford Pub. By rail, go to London Victoria station and take a National Rail train heading toward Brighton. Balham is four stops South of  London Victoria station. The pub’s web-site shows how to find the pub from either station.

Who knows? Your night at the Bedford may be the night a new music star is born.

music Jazzy Nights in Hyde Park~with Pizza?!

Do you know that Jazz and pizza go together when you are in London? Who knew? I certainly didn’t until I was invited to hear a Jazz guitarist in Hyde Park at…Pizza Express of all places. I have sung the praises of Pizza Express elsewhere on the site as a great, affordable place to take children for a kid-friendly meal and delicious fresh salads with one of their 17 hand-crafted pizzas with a glass of wine for the adults. But, this was a first…a high-quality jazz venue in a Pizza restaurant ?

By night, two of their locations, Hyde Park~ Pizza on the Park, most notably, and Pizza Express SOHO have well know smaller jazz acts performing in a setting that has been newly renovated to make the clubs cozier and welcoming. It’s a odd concept, maybe, but please don’t judge until you have tried it.

“UK’s Queen of Soul”, Mica Paris, who caught my attention all those years ago on MTV Europe, is now making a comeback after a 20 year abscene from live performance. To reconnect with her fans, and to support her new album, she is performing from the 26th of January. 2010 through the 31st of January 2010 at the Hyde Park location. If you are not familar with her soul-infused voice, have a listen as she sings while the once and always great, David Gilmour plays guitar:

Their website: has a complete, frequently upated list of upcoming acts that offers you the option of joining their newletter to keep you in the know if you are a true jazz fan. You can contact them via e-mail through the site, or their phone number, which is listed there, too.

To get to the Hyde Park location of Pizza Express, Pizza on the Park (where you find Jazz on the Park) is easy: take the Picadilly Line to Hyde Park Tube stop and exit from the Underground through Exit Four. The venue is located right next to the chi-chi-la-la Lanesborough Hotel which is on the corner, across the street from the exit.

A word to the wise: The Hyde Park location advertises  having” limited disabled access” and suggests you contact them beforehand to discuss the options. I think it’s wonderful they offer the option at all, as many smaller places in London have no options, whatsoever,  for the disabled. Well done, Pizza Express.

music “STAMP” Your Feet to the Music

On the 7th of January. 2010, the Royal Mail has issued a set of stamps depicting a series of classic album covers that are sure to catch the attention of music lovers. Included in the series, among others, is The Clash’s London Calling, The Rolling Stones Let it Bleed, Blur’s Parklife, Led Zeppelin’s IV, Cold Play’s A Rush of Blood to the Head and David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust.

Melanie Corfield of the Royal Mail sums it up perfectly when she says: “For decades the album sleeve has been the canvas for some of the most imaginative graphic artists in the world, and this issue celebrates this unique art form and some of its greatest examples”.

For now the stamps can be purchased on-line @  : where they are set-up to ship to the US (look for “Rest of the World” option in the drop-down box on the “checkout” page). I would imagine very soon in the future the stamps will be available at some London post offices for you to purchase while there. Check back with the Royal Mail site to see when that option might become available.

Or, if the site offers no forthcoming information about the purchase of stamps at a London Post Office, you could try this post office while there. It is a large office and has longer opening hours than most:

Trafalgar Square Post Office, London
24 William IV Street, WC2N 4DL
Tube: Charing Cross and Leicester Square.
Open: 8am-5:30pm, Monday-Saturday.
Phone: +44 (0)20 7930 9580

Keep in mind that many newsagents have small post office kiosks within their stores and they, too, might be a source for these stamps in the future.
